MAAC Player of the Year Jolly has been named MAAC Player of the Year, Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports reports.

Impact Jolly has had an interesting path to earn this award. He started his career at Baylor in 2017-18 where he didn't see much playing time. He then made the move to SMU where he developed into a very strong player. After two years with the Mustangs, Jolly joined up with coach Rick Pitino and Iona. He ended the regular season averaging 14.5 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.5 three-pointers per contest.

Steady production for Gaels Jolly supplied 16 points (6-12 FG, 3-5 3Pt, 1-1 FT), one rebound, one assist and two steals in 37 minutes during Sunday's 67-61 win over Rider.

Impact It was the second consecutive game with exactly 16 points for Jolly, who leads a deep Gaels rotation with a scoring average of 14.7 ppg. After beginning his career with stints at Baylor and SMU, Jolly found his way to coach Rick Pitino before the season and has so far been the only Iona player to start all 29 games. The Gaels currently hold a four-game lead over anyone else in the MAAC conference, but they'll still likely need to take care of business in the conference tournament in order to go dancing.

Impact Jolly had been away from the team since November due to a personal matter and returned Saturday to make his first appearance of the season. The 6-4 guard made 30 starts last season while averaging 14.5 points and 6.2 rebounds per game so it's likely he'll eventually integrate himself into the starting unit once he's fully up to speed.

Impact Jolly was recently seen on the sidelines and, while head coach Tim Jankovich didn't confirm his presence, all signs would seem to indicate he'd return to the lineup here. Jolly averaged 14.5 points per game to lead SMU last season, but he also averaged 6.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game as a regular starter last season.

Impact Jolly has been absent from the team so far due to personal reasons and hasn't appeared in any of the five games the Mustangs have played so far. He's given way to the likes of Emmanuel Bandoumel and William Douglas in the meantime, but his presence on the sidelines at least seems to be a step in the right direction. Barring any additions to the schedule, SMU is not set to play against until a Dec. 30 matchup at Temple, so Jolly will have plenty of time to sort out his status with the program.

Impact It's been a strange start to the year for last year's leading scorer at SMU (14.5 ppg), as Jolly still hasn't taken the court. The preseason all-AAC guard at one point tweeted via his unverified Twitter account that "It's over for me" but that appears to have been deleted. He added another post Wednesday stating "don't count me out too soon." Per Bill Embody of 247 Sports, coach Tim Jankovich told reporters Monday that Jolly is out for personal reasons, but didn't offer much beyond that. Jolly's next chance to take the court will be Saturday against Dayton, but there's been little reason to suggest this saga will be coming to an end any time soon.
