Impact Mayo earned his first start of the season and while he struggled putting the ball into the basket, he stepped up his game in other ways by adding 10 boards and leading the team with seven helpers across 34 minutes. Coach Bill Self is unafraid to give heavy minutes to his starters which makes Mayo's promotion to the starting lineup while seeing his time on the floor rise to 34 minutes in a tight contest against a quality opponent is a good sign for his role and potential production moving forward.

The senior transfer from South Dakota State has racked up 40 points through two games while showing no ill-effects in making the leap from the Summit League. Mayo was the star of the offseason for Kansas and through two games has justified the hype.

Impact Mayo certainly has the ability to score in bunches after back-to-back seasons of 18.0 ppg or greater at South Dakota State, but it was a bit surprising seeing the senior work in a reserve capacity after starting in exhibition play. That didn't affect his usage, however, as he led the Jayhawks in scoring and tied KJ Adams for the most minutes played. Mayo will look for a repeat performance in upcoming matchups against North Carolina (Friday) and Michigan State (Tuesday).

Impact Mayo started last week's exhibition game against Arkansas, but came off the bench in this one and was more productive drilling four shots from deep. Mayo certainly has the respect of coach Bill Self and will be playing a lot this season because of his ball-handling and shooting ability. That being said, this team has a lot of talented pieces they want to work in and that will take some time. Kansas will open the regular season on Monday against Howard.

Making strong impression Mayo has been "our most consistent, best guy since June," according to coach Bill Self, via The Goodman and Hummel Basketball Podcast.

Impact When Self was asked to give his starting lineup for the upcoming season, he said "it would be hard to keep Juan (Dajuan Harris), KJ (KJ Adams), Hunt (Hunter Dickinson) and Zeke Mayo out of the lineup." The first three are not a surprise, but Self clearly sees Mayo as a big part of their team for the upcoming season. Mayo was an elite scorer at South Dakota State that also was very strong at running the offense. Mayo and Harris give coach Self two very trusted ball-handlers in the lineup, and have a lot of similarities to the 2021-22 team with Harris and Remy Martin that ultimately paired well together and won an NCAA Championship. The final starting spot in the Kansas lineup next season is likely between AJ Storr and Rylan Griffen at the small forward spot, but both should still see plenty of action.

Impact The Jackrabbits have won five of their last six games and currently hold a narrow lead on the top spot in the Summit League. Mayo has been the main catalyst, as the junior is averaging 21.6 points, 5.1 rebounds and 4.0 assists over his last eight games. This hasn't came out of nowhere, as Mayo did post 18.2 ppg last season for South Dakota State, but he's currently on pace to beat that mark if he can keep up this pace down the stretch.
