Starting season opener Head Coach Kirk Ferentz has named McNamara the starting quarterback for Iowa's season opener against Illinois State, Dan Morrison of On3Sports.com reports.

Impact McNamara will start the the season as the man under center as the Hawkeyes take on Illinois State. Although the senior quarterback had some questionable play during training camp, he'll ultimately take the QB1 role over Brendan Sullivan at least for the beginning of the season. McNamara threw for 505 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions before suffering a torn left ACL in the 2023 season.

Impact McNamara opened spring camp with a knee brace while still recovering from a torn ACL, but now the quarterback appears to be fully healthy. That's excellent news for an Iowa offense that's desperately seeking to improve, and McNamara's veteran presence figures to be a big factor in that equation. Before his injury last fall, the quarterback threw for 505 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions while completing 51.1 percent of his passes.
