Listed as co-starter Friel is listed as a co-starter for the Rebels' game Saturday at Houston.
Impact Despite logging one carry and zero passes during 2023, Friel has an opportunity to be UNLV's starting quarterback after Jaiden Mayava enrolled elsewhere. Friel has been competing against Matthew Sluka and Hajj-Malik Williams for the QB1 position.

Listed as co-starter after spring Friel and Doug Brumfield are the top two quarterbacks on the depth chart following spring ball, Steve Cofield of ESPN Las Vegas reports.
Impact Friel was in a three-way competition for the starting job to open spring but appears to be part of a two-way battle following the session, with Harrison Bailey falling behind. In nine games for UNLV last season, Friel completed 62.4 percent of his pass attempts for 1,608 yards and a 6:11 TD:INT ratio.

Competing for starting job Friel is competing with Doug Brumfield and Harrison Bailey for the starting job, Mike Grimala of the Las Vegas Sun reports.
Impact The reigning Mountain West Freshman of the Year is locked in what is by accounts a fierce quarterback competition. Friel had highs and lows in 2021, as he was thrust into the starting role and forced to start eight games. That experience should prove valuable for him in this position battle. Fellow sophomore Doug Brumfield looked shaky at best in two starts, completing less than 50 percent of his passes. Tennessee transfer Harrison Bailey has limited SEC reps in several appearances in 2020. The competition should come down to some form of Friel vs. Brumfield, the two most familiar with the offense.
