Will start season opener Stroud was named the team's starting quarterback Saturday by head coach Ryan Day for their opener against Minnesota on Sept. 2, Bill Landis of The Athletic reports.

Impact Stroud had emerged as the leader in the quarterback competition earlier in the week and the Buckeyes finally made it official Saturday. The redshirt freshman never attempted a pass last season while stuck behind Justin Fields but he did break free for a 48-yard touchdown run in a blowout over Michigan State. Stroud was one of the top quarterback recruits in the Class of 2020 and has drawn comparisons similar to Fields. He doesn't possess the same speed Fields has but he has the arm strength to throw the ball to any area of the field and has enough mobility to extend plays when needed. Jack Miller and Kyle McCord will continue to battle for the No. 2 position behind Stroud.

Impact Following a redshirted freshman season behind Justin Fields, Stroud appears to have taken the upper hand in the race to replace Fields. The 6-foot-3 215-pound quarterback is expected to be a quick yet strong rusher who will play with one of the best wide receiver corps in the country. If Stroud can win the QB1 role, the 19-year-old will lead one of the top teams in the country, that's hoping to compete for a National Championship.
