Impact Smith was a strong secondary receiver the last couple years, and some expected him to take over as the number-one guy with Malachi Corley moving onto the NFL. Instead, Kisean Messer and Easton Messer have risen above him on the depth chart, and Smith has all of 162 yards on the season.

Impact Entering his fourth season with WKU, the expectation was that Smith would be the number-one target for the passing game, or at least a steady and reliable second option. Instead, he has nine catches for 93 yards through four games.

Impact It was expected Smith would become the top receiver in this pass-happy offense with Malachi Corley moving on to the NFL. It's been a slow start, but at least Smith did find the end zone in this one.

Impact After catching nine passes for 77 yards and three touchdowns in WKU's bowl game last season, and with Malachi Corley in the NFL, expectations were high for Smith this season. There is little reason for this result, bad as it is, to dim your enthusiasm for Smith. We should probably take more away in terms of how good Alabama's defense looks than anything about the WKU passing game.

Records three touchdowns Smith recorded nine receptions (on 12 targets) for 77 yards and three touchdowns during Monday's 38-35 overtime victory against Old Dominion.

Impact Smith doubled his 2023 touchdown tally from three to six. Though only one game is a small sample size, it currently seems like he and Caden Veltkamp can connect very well. With the latter presently expected to be Western Kentucky's primary quarterback during 2024, perhaps this connection can continue to excel later this year. Regardless, Smith is a great target for any WKU quarterback, as his 500-plus receiving yards and six corresponding touchdowns suggest.

Throws TD Smith caught four passes for 38 yards versus FIU on Saturday. He also threw a 32-yard touchdown.

Impact Obviously, the passing touchdown was on a gimmick play, but it still counts for fantasy purposes. Smith didn't take the step forward some envisioned this season, though injuries played a role, and he still is likely to set new highs in receptions and receiving yards.

Nets 125 yards Smith caught seven passes for 125 yards and a touchdown against Sam Houston on Saturday.

Impact There was a thought that Smith would emerge as the number-two receiver for WKU, a potentially productive role given the track record of this offense. However, this is his first 100-yard game of the year, and he only has 398 yards through nine outings.

Impact This is Smith's first touchdown since the season opener, and his first since he returned from injury. There was some thought Smith might be the number-two option behind Malachi Corley this season, but that has not proved to be true thus far.

Big game in bowl Smith caught six passes for 145 yards and a touchdown in the New Orleans Bowl against South Alabama on Wednesday.

Impact This was Smith's first 100-yard game of the season, so he got it in just under the wire. Smith's role increased considerably this season, but he was still at best the fourth option in this passing game. However, that could change next year, and this season was encouraging to be sure.

Considered week-to-week Smith suffered a minor injury during camp and is considered week-to-week, Jared MacDonald of The Bowling Green Daily News reports.

Impact Smith recorded four catches for 58 yards and a pair of touchdowns last season before his season came to a halt due to a broken leg. While he's past the leg issue, it appears another injury has propped up that will require attention ahead of the season. It's best to consider him questionable for the opener against UT-Martin until more information surfaces.
