Impact This is a tough development for Brown. He transferred to Cal after three seasons at Ohio State. He never got much of a chance to show what he can do, only attempting 48 passes. Still, he was presumed to be the favorite for the Bears' QB1 job, and now he's lost that competition to a freshman. He'll be the top backup and may still take the reins should Sagapolutele struggle, but will start the season on the bench.

Impact At quarterback, Brown's primary competition is a freshman. The redshirt junior's collegiate experience includes 27 completions for 331 yards and three touchdowns. California's quarterback decision is expected before the Golden Bears play at Oregon State on Aug. 30.

Impact Only a day after Ohio State won the 2025 National Championship Game, Brown has selected his next college. California's quarterback position has been relatively depleted, with Fernando Mendoza committing to Indiana and his 2024 backups also choosing transfers from Cal. Currently, EJ Caminong and other newcomers would be Brown's competition for a QB1 role. At the very least, Brown himself can say he attempted double-digit passes and completed a touchdown pass during each of his last two seasons.

Impact Brown stepped in late in the second half after starting quarterback Will Howard took a hard hit that briefly forced him out of the game. The junior backup hit a 17-yard touchdown pass on his first play from scrimmage, finding standout true freshman wideout Jeremiah Smith who made a one-handed grab up the right sideline. Brown then took back over the reins to start the fourth quarter before handing them to freshman Julian Sayin for the final five minutes. With Howard coming back and playing the entire third quarter, there should be no question that he's still the starter for next week's home game against Iowa.
