Thus, Lagway sits atop the team's released depth chart and appears slated to take the reins under center for at least one week. If he plays well enough, it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility for Lagway to challenge Mertz for the starting job when SEC play opens in Week 3 versus Texas A&M.

Impact Lagway came in to relieve the injured starter during Saturday's matchup against the Hurricanes and could be getting his first start in the upcoming matchup. The freshman quarterback completed 50 percent of his passes for 31 yards and one interception. Although no news have surfaced regarding Mertz' availability, it is easy to speculate he may have to rest a game or two in order to fully recover. The Gators will face Samford at home Saturday.
