Tommy DeVito - Turns over final scoop and score DeVito was 23-for-34 passing for 253 yards during the 19-10 loss to Mississippi State in the ReliaQuest Bowl on Jan. 2. He also had 10 rushes for -35 yards with one touchdown. Impact DeVito had to carry a bigger workload with running back Chase Brown, who finished the regular season as the nation's fourth-leading rusher, sitting out in preparation for the 2023 NFL Draft. As a result, the Illini had more passing attempts than carries (29), which included seven sacks on DeVito. The senior signal-caller did log his sixth rushing touchdown of the season with a two-yard plunge late in the second quarter, and he finished just about his season average in passing yards per attempt (7.4). However, DeVito failed to convert a third down on four straight drives in the second half before logging a fumble with a last-ditch backward lateral on the final play of the game. The Syracuse transfer finished his lone season at Illinois with career highs in completion percentage (69.6), passing yards (2,650) and total touchdowns (21), marking one of the best seasons for an Illinois quarterback in the past decade. His absence will leave Ole Miss transfer Luke Altmyer with a significant role to fill heading into the 2023 season.
