Not starting season opener Horton will start the season in a backup role, per Pete Thamel of ESPN.com.

Impact With redshirt freshman Darian Mensah being named the week 1 starter, Horton will start the season as a backup option for Tulane. Horton and Ty Thompson were thought to be the likely competitors for the starting job after being named co-starters in the team's official depth chart, but Mensah came on strong and was also named a co-starter before earning the starting job against Southeastern Louisiana.

Impact Horton and Thompson were competing to be Tulane's quarterback during the summer. If the depth chart is any indication, the Green Wave's QB race remains far from clear, especially with them naming both players and Darian Mensah as co-starters.

In competition for QB1 Horton is competing against Ty Thompson for Tulane's quarterback position, Guerry Smith of NOLA.com reports.

Impact Not even one week after Horton's portal withdrawal, Tulane received a commitment from Thompson, who played relatively well during 2023 despite being Oregon's backup to Bo Nix. Still, there is a better chance Horton serves as Tulane's 2024 QB1, especially now that the Green Wave no longer have Michael Pratt or Landon Ibieta on their football roster. Horton will just have to continually impress, like he did with 140 scrimmage yards and one touchdown during the 2023 Military Bowl.

Impact Horton will enter the transfer portal after spending three seasons with Tulane. Across three appearances this season, he completed 31 of 62 passes for 485 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.
