Impact Downing completed 20 of his 35 pass attempts for 194 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions during the team's opener against Missouri, but he also lost 13 yards on five rushing attempts. His poor performance in Week 1 opened the door for McNeil to be named the Bulldogs' starting pass-thrower last Saturday, when he threw for 197 yards and three touchdowns in the 52-17 victory over Stephen F. Austin. McNeil is slated to start again for Louisiana Tech on Saturday against Clemson, while it looks like Downing lost his starting gig for the time being.

Emerges as La. Tech's starter Louisiana Tech informed Downing on Monday that he'll be named the team's starting quarterback in advance of the Sept. 1 season opener at Missouri, Pete Thamel of ESPN.com reports.
Impact Downing, a redshirt junior, joined the Bulldogs over the offseason after prior stops at Georgia and TCU. The quarterback's prior experience with first-year head coach Sonny Cumbie from their time together at TCU -- where Cumbie previously served as an offensive coordinator -- likely gave Downing a leg up in his competition with Troy graduate transfer Parker McNeil in terms of grasping the concepts of the coach's fast-paced offense. During his prior four years of college, Downing saw limited action at Georgia and TCU, completing 28 of 44 pass attempts for 282 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
