Brett Gabbert - Starting Week 2 Gabbert (thumb) will start Saturday's game against Minnesota, Ryan Burns of 247Sports.com reports.

Impact Gabbert missed the opener due to injury but appears to be ready to give it a go in Week 2 and should be the starter moving forward. In two games last season, Gabbert completed 65.7 percent of his passes for 384 yards and a 4:0 TD:INT ratio.

Brett Gabbert - Injured twice during fall camp Gabbert (head/thumb) injured his knee during fall camp then hit his thumb on a helmet when he returned to practice, according to AP writer Mark Schmetzer.

Impact Gabbert was in uniform and available for Saturday's season opener against Cincinnati, but since he had hardly practiced AJ Mayer got the start. Gabbert can be tentatively expected to start next week against Minnesota.

Impact Afari got some action in his collegiate debut. Miami of Ohio's backfield may welcome Jaylon Bester and/or Tyre Shelton into the fold next week against Minnesota, which would leave everyone else in background roles.

Impact Tracy scored the RedHawks' only offensive touchdown in the game. The statuses of Jaylon Bester and Tyre Shelton are unclear, but if one or both is in action next week against Minnesota Tracy's role is likely to be minimal.

Impact Mayer surprisingly got the start under center over Brett Gabbert, and predictably struggled against a good opponent. Unless he's injured and that's to be unveiled this coming week, Gabbert should get the start next week against Minnesota.

Impact While Mayer and Brett Gabbert were reportedly in a "1A and 1B" situation under center, it appears Mayer will be given the first look under center when it was expected Gabbert would. It's still quite possible the two will split snaps under center.

Impact Gabbert and Mayer both saw action last season, but Gabbert also missed time with a concussion. Gabbert is lined up for a breakout season in 2021, with Mayer as the capable backup who can step in if needed.

He's entering his sixth season of college football and figures to be involved in the passing game once again after combining for 26 receptions for 357 yards and five touchdowns over the 2018 and 2019 seasons.
