Impact Cain has a history of injuries that have prevented him from playing a full season, tallying no more than 84 carries in a season to date. He also has some new and deep competition for reps out of the backfield. Per Tyler Donohue of 247Sports, coach James Franklin is anticipating using three backs on Saturday, but Donohue notes the lead guys appear to be Cain and Keyvonne Lee at this point. The duo should receive a good chunk of carries this fall, while Baylor transfer John Lovett, Devyn Ford and, possibly to a lesser extent, Caziah Holmes could all be candidates for reps behind them.

Impact Cain was injured in the team's season-opener against Indiana on Oct. 24 and ultimately was ruled out for the rest of the season after tallying just three carries for 13 yards. Head coach James Franklin spoke to the media Friday and said he's been getting in reps but just not in a live setting as the team is being very cautious about reincorporating him into drills. Franklin also mentioned that Cain is a bit further along in his recovery than he expected so it'll be interesting to see how much he's able to do once fall camp rolls around. The team relied on Devyn Ford, Keyvone Lee and Caziah Holmes to handle the brunt of the workload out of the backfield once Cain went down and also added graduate transfer John Lovett from Baylor back in December. Cain likely won't be the clear-cut No. 1 guy anymore with the Nittany Lions having such a crowded running back room.
