Impact Stone and the SMU offense carried lofty expectations into the 2023 season, but it took the Mustangs a while to get going in Reno. Stone threw an interception on the first drive of the game trying to take a deep shot, and was pulled after several fruitless series in favor of Kevin Jennings. Stone would ultimately return, and eventually threw the game-winning touchdown pass to RJ Maryland on a gorgeous deep ball. Still, it wasn't the most inspiring performance from the gunslinger, and head coach Rhett Lashlee demonstrated he has no issue playing Jennings if Stone struggles.
