Impact Thompson left on a freak leg injury Saturday and did not return. He was able to walk back to the locker room under his own power and coach Chris Klieman said the team is hoping for good news once Thompson is further evaluated. Impact Per Robinett, Thompson hit his knee on the ground at the end of a run and was helped to the sideline. He is being examined in the sideline medical tent and his status for the rest of Saturday is uncertain at this time.

Two rushing scores vs. Stanford Thompson went 9-of-14 passing for 144 yards with an interception while racking up 33 yards and two scores on 10 carries in Saturday's 24-7 win over Stanford.
Impact With two rushing scores, Thompson started back up exactly where he left off when he sustained a shoulder injury which took him out for most of 2020. During the 2019 season, Thompson had 11 rushing scores and he could realistically do that again this season as he projects to have double-digit carries most games. Thompson did find some minor success through the air, but did not find a touchdown pass. The sixth year senior will look for his first touchdown pass of 2021 when the Wildcats play Southern Illinois next week.

Impact Thompson suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in the team's third game of the season last year, which forced the Wildcats to take away Will Howard's redshirt as he was immediately thrust into the starting role for the remainder of 2020. The team has already indicated that Thompson is the clear-cut starter at quarterback, but head coach Chris Klieman hasn't ruled out using Howard at times this season. Howard started seven games in Thompson's absence, throwing for 1,178 yards with eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions. It's unclear what the exact plan will be to utilize Howard but the Wildcats face a favorable scenario with two quarterbacks that have starting experience and intend to figure out a way to get Howard into action at times.
