Impact Wheaton underwent knee surgery, confirming his absence for SMU's 2024 season. It was expected to include him as a primary option at running back, but this year's Mustangs will have to rely more on other backs like Jaylan Knighton and LJ Johnson. Brashard Smith and Zane Minors are a few of several more candidates who could receive upticks in statistical output with Wheaton out.

Impact At least for Saturday, Jennings will receive some opportunities to work behind SMU's starting quarterback Preston Stone. The former showed some upside around his 2023 season's conclusion, which including him logging 24 completions for 191 yards and one touchdown during a bowl game. While his statistical output at Nevada is expected to be limited, perhaps some positives can come from his 2024 debut.

Impact A broken fibula prematurely ended Stone's 2023 season, and he spent pretty much all of the offseason to recover from his injury. Fortunately for him, he will begin the Mustangs' 2024 season like he ended their 2023 campaign, as starting quarterback. Stone logged 206 completions for 3,197 yards and 28 touchdowns that year. He finished 2023 with more than 32 TDs by recording four of them with his feet. Having an excellent season under his belt, Stone has expectations, so he is expected to be one of college football's best quarterbacks during 2024.

Impact Lozano entered the transfer portal in April after spending the 2023 season with Texas and landed at SMU. It's unclear if he'll have much of a role since several kickers are vying for action in the Mustangs roster, with Collin Rogers leading the way in the depth chart.

The redshirt junior was having a career season in 2023 prior to his injury, putting up 3,197 yards and 28 touchdowns to just six interceptions before going down. Stone will be hoping to use his return season to put his team in position to make a splash in their inaugural season in the ACC.
