Named QB1 Buchner will be the starting quarterback for Notre Dame when the season begins for the Fighting Irish, Pete Sampson of The Athletic reports.

Impact This confirms that Buchner has beat out Drew Pyne for the starting role. Buchner completed 21 of 36 attempts for 298 yards and three touchdowns last season. Buchner should make huge improvements in a full season as the top signal caller.

No limitations in fall camp Buchner (ankle) has been practicing without limitations in fall camp, SI.com reports.

Impact Buchner did not play in the spring game due to an ankle injury. It was never deemed to be that serious of an injury and Buchner has looked solid in fall camp to this point. He is expected to be the starter for a huge opener on Sept. 3 at Ohio State.

Showcases legs, arm in win Buchner completed all three of his pass attempts for 78 yards and one touchdown while rushing seven times for 68 yards in Saturday's 32-29 win over Toledo.

Impact The freshman quarterback gave the Fighting Irish a spark off the bench while starting quarterback Jack Coan struggled to direct the offense for most of the day. Coan still rallied the Fighting Irish with a game-winning touchdown pass to tight end Michael Mayer, which should be enough for the signal-caller to retain the starting job heading into the Sept. 18 matchup with Purdue. That said, Coan is likely on a short leash, and Buchner's superior rushing ability should at least allow him to continue to have a role Week 3 in select packages.
