Impact The only component that seemed to work well for USC in the upset was their offensive line, which gave Kedon Slovis ample time in the pocket and did a great job opening lanes for Malepeai and Keaontay Ingram. Without the backfield making plays, this game could have gotten even more out of hand. It was a much more decisive loss than the box score would indicate, and Malepeai certainly isn't what's ailing the team currently - it's a lack of hustle and discipline on defense.

Solid day in victory Malepeai rushed 14 times for 65 yards in Saturday's 30-7 win over San Jose State. He also caught two passes for two yards.
Impact The carries between Malepeai and newcomer Keaontay Ingram were almost exactly even, and the two backs complemented each other well. It appears that Malepeai is more familiar with blocking schemes, so he saw more snaps than Ingram, but it seems that there is plenty of work to go around between the two rushers.

Expected to split snaps in opener Malepeai and Keaontay Ingram are expected to split carries in the opener against San Jose State, Ryan Kartje of the Los Angeles Times reports.
Impact Malepeai missed the tail end of the 2020 season with a knee injury. He has been healthy throughout camp, while Ingram and Darwin Barlow have both been battling injuries. Malepeai will have a chance to impress the coaching staff in the opener and earn more carries down the line.
