Mateer took over for Cam Ward, who transferred to the University of Miami (Florida). Mateer's second start might be harder against Texas Tech on Sept. 7. Tech's defense though gave up more than 500 passing yards to Division 1 FCS Abilene Christian in the Raiders' 52-51 win on Saturday.

Impact Although the quarterback battle was announced to be extended to this week, it looked like Mateer had the edge over Eckhaus as of late. Eckhaus transferred in from Bryant this offseason, totaling 8,527 passing yards (724-of-1,166), 75 touchdowns and 25 interceptions in his three-season starter tenure. The 6-foot play-caller will now be the second-string to Mateer for the season opener against Portland State but, as always, anything can happen in a long season of college football.

John Mateer - Named starting quarterback Mateer has been named the starting quarterback for Washington State ahead of the 2024 season, according to Greg Woods of The Spokane Spokesman-Review.

Impact Head coach Jake Dickert recently said the starting quarterback would be named after last Saturday's scrimmage, and it seems Mateer has earned the role. There's not much of a surprise here; however, as he was seen as the favorite to secure the QB1 gig over Zevi Eckhaus. Mateer had a supplementary rushing and receiving role in the 2023 season, but the departure of Cam Ward generated a battle for the starting role under center, and Mateer has come away with the job. He's lined up to lead Washington State in the season opener against Portland State on Aug. 31.
