Impact Although the quarterback battle was announced to be extended to this week, it looked like Mateer had the edge over Eckhaus as of late. Eckhaus transferred in from Bryant this offseason, totaling 8,527 passing yards (724-of-1,166), 75 touchdowns and 25 interceptions in his three-season starter tenure. The 6-foot play-caller will now be the second-string to Mateer for the season opener against Portland State but, as always, anything can happen in a long season of college football.

QB battle to end next week Eckhaus will know his fate in the ongoing quarterback battle between himself and John Mateer after next week's scrimmage, Greg Woods of The Spokane Spokesman-Review reports.

Impact Eckhaus is currently engaged in a battle for the QB1 job in Pullman with Mateer. It's one that's raged on throughout the offseason and is still unsettled, with Washington State head coach Jake Dickert saying he'll name a starter after next Saturday's scrimmage. This competition appears to be neck-and-neck, and the Bryant transfer has put up an excellent fight in Pullman thus far.
