Pitches well Sunday Sampson tossed 4.2 scoreless innings of relief in Sunday's loss to Atlanta. He allowed one hit and struck out five.

Impact Chicago starter Kyle Hendricks struggled, allowing six runs across 4.1 innings, but Sampson at least helped the bullpen by covering the rest of the game. He also pitched well, and he's now up to 5.2 scoreless innings this season across two appearances. Sampson just returned to the majors Thursday, though it looks like he could stick around as a long reliever, at least if he keeps pitching like this.

The Mariners released Sampson less than two weeks later, and the veteran right-hander re-signed with the Cubs on a minor-league deal. After the bullpen was taxed in the Cubs' 19-5 loss to the Padres on Wednesday, Sampson will be available to cover multiple innings in relief in Thursday's series finale, if needed.

Back with Cubs organization Sampson re-signed Tuesday with the Cubs on a minor-league deal and was assigned to Triple-A Iowa, Tommy Birch of The Des Moines Register reports.

Impact Sampson previously signed with the Cubs in March and made a one-inning appearance out of the bullpen May 8 when he was called up from the minors. He was designated for assignment and claimed off waivers by the Mariners just a few days later, but his stay in the Seattle organization lasted just under two weeks before he elected free agency. He'll now rejoin the Cubs and will serve as organizational starting depth at Iowa.
