Announces retirement
Sanchez has announced his retirement from professional baseball, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports.
Impact
Sanchez, 32, had been playing in independent ball this season with the Staten Island FerryHawks. The utility player spent parts of four major-league seasons with the Nationals, batting .262/.287/.328.

Returns to Nationals
Sanchez signed a minor-league deal with the Nationals on Wednesday, according to the MLB transaction log.
Impact
Sanchez has spent his entire career in the Nationals' organization, though his future with the club appeared in jeopardy after he was designated for assignment in September. However, he now returns on a minor-league deal and could serve as a depth infielder in Washington in 2022.

Clears waivers
Sanchez cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Rochester on Thursday, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports.
Impact
Sanchez was cast off the 40-man roster Monday, but he'll opt to remain in the organization rather than hitting free agency. He made 37 appearances in Rochester earlier this year and slashed .336/.384/.492 with four homers, 19 runs, 18 RBI and two stolen bases.

Designated for assignment
Sanchez was designated for assignment by the Nationals on Monday, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
Impact
Sanchez saw sporadic playing time during his stint with the major-league club, and he'll be cast off the 40-man roster after Jordy Mercer (calf) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Monday. The 31-year-old appeared in 16 games with the Nationals this year and hit .257 with two doubles, five runs and an RBI.

Moves back to bench
Sanchez is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Phillies.
Impact
Sanchez went 4-for-15 at the dish while starting in each of the Nationals' last four games, but he'll most likely fill a utility role moving forward with Alcides Escobar (wrist) drawing back into the lineup. While the 34-year-old Escobar isn't a long-term piece for the rebuilding Nationals, he's earned an everyday role for the time being thanks to the serviceable .271/.340/.375 slash line he's provided since joining the big club in early July.

Contract selected by Nationals
Sanchez's contract was selected by the Nationals on Friday.
Impact
The 30-year-old returned from the injured list in mid-July, and he should now serve as a utility man for the big-league club after Trea Turner (illness) and Josh Harrison were recently traded. Sanchez has slashed .336/.385/.496 with four homers, 19 runs, 18 RBI and two stolen bases in 36 games at Triple-A Rochester this year.

Outrighted off roster
Sanchez (Achilles) cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Fresno on Friday, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
Impact
Sanchez is expected to miss a fair portion of the 2021 campaign while recovering from a torn Achilles tendon. The move means he won't be taking up space on the 40-man roster while working his way back from the injury.
