Released by Astros The Astros released Diaz on Friday, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Impact Roughly a month after reuniting with Houston on a minor-league deal in July, Diaz will now be let go in order to make room for Shay Whitcomb, who was promoted from Triple-A in a corresponding move. The 34-year-old Diaz appeared in only two games while with the Astros, going 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. He'll now presumably look to latch on with another organization on a minor-league deal.

Impact Diaz joined the Astros on a minor-league contract July 13 after being released by the Athletics one week prior. Diaz spent four seasons with Houston from 2019 to 2022, playing in 262 major-league games over that span before signing a two-year deal with Oakland in December of 2022. After signing a minor-league deal with the Astros, Diaz played in four games in the Florida Complex league before his call up Monday, going 5-for-15 with one double and two RBI. To make room for Diaz on the 40-man roster, David Hensley was designated for assignment.

Impact Diaz was let go by the A's last week after posting a .236 OPS in 30 major-league plate appearances, but he'll now receive another opportunity with the Astros. He'll report to the team's complex in Florida in order to work on his mechanics before likely moving to Triple-A Sugar Land to fill in as organizational depth.

Impact Diaz played seven innings at third base in Friday's game against El Paso before walking in his only plate appearance as the designated hitter Saturday. There's been no report of an aggravation of the injury to explain why Diaz was in the game for such a brief time Saturday, and he was then out of the lineup Sunday before the team's off day Monday. The Aviators also saw their scheduled game against Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday postponed due to rain, so Diaz will have had some extra rest if he does return to the lineup for the Aviators on Wednesday.
