Bo Bichette makes last out at home on Canada Day, Alek Manoah moves to Double A Manoah allowed 11 runs on 10 hits in 2 2/3 innings pitching in the rookie-level Florida Complex League but the Blue Jays remain optimistic.
Moves to Double-A Manoah will make his next start with Double-A New Hampshire on Sunday, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports.
Impact Despite being hammered for 11 runs in just 2.2 innings during his time in rookie ball, the Blue Jays still felt that Manoah was able to do everything he needed to do and have now rewarded him with a promotion to Double-A. Although he was promoted rather quickly, it's still apparent Manoah has a long way to go before he can rejoin the Jays' rotation -- especially if he doesn't find a way to recover from Tuesday's abysmal performance.

Impact While it's easy to view the outing as akin to a spring training start in which the results are less important than a pitcher getting in his work, it's still hard to ignore that Manoah -- who finished third in AL Cy Young Award voting last season -- was giving up homers to teenage hitters, eventually surrendering 11 runs in only 2.2 innings. The right-hander will need to show a lot more progress before he can advance up the minor-league ladder, and his return to the Blue Jays rotation still appears to be weeks, if not months, away.

Impact Making his first live appearance since being optioned to the minors in early June, Manoah surrendered 10 hits -- including two homers and two doubles -- in a brutal outing versus the FCL affiliate of the Yankees. He also issued two walks, ultimately retiring only eight of the 20 batters he faced. Blue Jays manager John Schneider told reporters last week that the 25-year-old right-hander was trending well in recent side sessions, but he clearly has a lot more work to do on the farm before he can be considered a reliable option again for Toronto's starting rotation.

Reports from FCL 'very encouraging' Blue Jays manager John Schneider said in an interview on MLB Network Radio on Wednesday that reports on Manoah from the Florida Complex League have been "very encouraging."
Impact Manoah is at the Blue Jays' spring training complex in Florida to "adjust mechanics" and other things, per Schneider. "Reports have been very encouraging from not only the pitching lab but I think the way he's kind of attacking his overall time down there," Schneider said. The manager added that Manoah's first bullpen session was over 70 pitches and the plan is for the righty to face live hitters later this week. Eventually, Manoah will be assigned to a higher affiliate to get in some work in game action, although there's no timeable for that yet.
