Set to make MLB debut Wednesday The Tigers announced that Faedo will be recalled from Triple-A Toledo to serve as Detroit's starting pitcher for the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader with the Pirates.
Impact The 2017 first-round selection will be designated as the 27th man for the twin bill and make his MLB debut in the nightcap while Michael Pineda takes the hill for Game 1. Dating back to the end of the 2019 season, Faedo has tossed just 15.2 innings in affiliated ball, with Tommy John surgery plus the cancellation of the 2020 minor-league season due to the COVID-19 pandemic conspiring to keep him off the mound. However, Faedo looked plenty healthy in his debut for Toledo on April 27, covering five scoreless innings while striking out eight. Ideally, the Tigers would give Faedo more time to stretch out at Triple-A, but he'll be summoned to the big leagues due to Detroit being down several other starting pitchers as it begins a stretch of 17 games in 15 days. Faedo will likely be optioned back to the minors following the doubleheader.

Impact Faedo started the 2022 season with Lakeland to build up his pitch count, as he had not thrown in affiliated ball since 2019 after undergoing Tommy John surgery. He worked 10.2 innings with a 12:3 K:BB at the level prior to his promotion, and he threw four innings in his latest outing. If Faedo performs well, it's possible he could reach the majors this season, but the Tigers will likely take a cautious approach given his injury history.

Impact On the comeback trail after his January 2021 Tommy John surgery, Faedo appears to be ready for game action. He started throwing bullpen sessions two months ago before throwing his first live batting practice session last week, according to Jason Beck of MLB.com. Though Faedo's last minor-league action came at Double-A Erie, the Tigers will have him drop down a level to begin the 2022 campaign so he can pitch in more favorable weather in Florida as he looks to shake off the rust following the lengthy layoff. He should report back to Erie or perhaps even Triple-A Toledo as the temperatures climb later in the spring.

Impact Faedo already faced an uphill climb to make the team as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery, and with spring training now condensed due to the lockout, the 26-year-old is almost certain to start the year in the minors. He might be an option for the majors down the road, but the club will likely want to see Faedo perform well at Double- and Triple-A before he gets his chance.
