Heads to IL with biceps tendinitis The Reds placed Diaz on the 15-day injured list Sunday with right biceps tendinitis.

Impact Diaz wasn't the clear-cut top option in the Reds' closer committee, but with Tony Santillan (back) recently joining Lucas Sims (back) on the injured list and with Art Warren having struggled in his recent appearances, Diaz seemingly had a good chance of emerging as Cincinnati's top option for saves in the short term. He had already performed as the Reds' best reliever this season with a 2.40 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 36:16 K:BB in 30 innings to go with two saves and eight holds, but the injury now casts doubt about Diaz's outlook moving forward. Biceps tendinitis can often be a precursor to a more serious injury, but for now, the Reds will have to hope that he misses the minimum 15 days or close to it. Warren and Hunter Strickland look like the best bet for saves with all of Diaz, Santillan and Sims on the IL.

Shaky in second save Diaz allowed two runs on a hit and a walk with one strikeout in one inning, earning the save in Sunday's 7-6 win over the Cardinals.

Impact Diaz gave up a two-run home run to Juan Yepez in the ninth inning, but the Cardinals couldn't manufacture a tying run. This was the fourth time in his last 10 outings Diaz has given up at least one run, surrendering seven in that span. He's posted a 2.48 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 35:16 K:BB across 29 innings overall. He's 2-0 with two saves and eight holds, so he should be expected to see more of a setup role within the Reds' broader closer committee.

Picks up first career save Diaz recorded the final three outs of Tuesday's extra-inning win over the Guardians to earn his first career save. He issued two walks and struck out three.

Impact Diaz didn't make it easy on himself -- he also uncorked a wild pitch that nearly scored the tying run -- but he ultimately punched out Jose Ramirez with the bases loaded and the game on the line. Art Warren blew the save chance in ninth. The brother of longtime closer Edwin Diaz, Alexis has been a revelation out of the Cincinnati bullpen this year, allowing one earned run while fanning 21 in 17.1 innings. The right-hander has emerged as a candidate to take over the closer role for the Reds until Lucas Sims (back) returns, and perhaps beyond.

Impact The younger brother of Mets closer Edwin Diaz entered 2022 with a relatively modest pedigree as a former 12th-round draft pick who hadn't pitched above the Double-A level in his first seven years in the professional ranks in the minors, but Alexis has exceeded expectations since earning a spot in the Reds' Opening Day bullpen coming out of spring training. Though he has yet to register a hold while playing for a 5-23 team, Diaz has likely earned himself a high-leverage role out of the bullpen on the back of his sterling ratios. More established relievers such as Lucas Sims, Art Warren and Tony Santillan may still be ahead of Diaz in the pecking order when it comes to save opportunities, however.

Makes Opening Day roster Manager David Bell said Monday that Diaz has made the Reds' Opening Day roster, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Impact After being added to the Reds' 40-man roster over the winter, Diaz will bypass the Triple-A level entirely and make the jump from Double-A Chattanooga to the majors to begin the 2022 campaign. The 25-year-old righty posted a 3.83 ERA and 70 strikeouts over 42.1 innings for Chattanooga in 2021 while limiting opposing hitters to a .194 average. He'll likely start the season in a low-leverage role out of the bullpen, but he could quickly move up the pecking order in a Cincinnati relief corps lacking in upside arms.
