Inks minor-league deal with Toronto The Blue Jays signed Sanchez to a minor-league contract Monday that includes an invitation to spring training, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports.

Impact Sanchez began the 2024 regular season with the Cubs in Triple-A, but he was dealt to the Marlins in mid-June in exchange for cash considerations. He ended up appearing in 31 games for Miami and posted a slash line of .167/.211/.190 with two stolen bases and four RBI across 96 plate appearances. Sanchez will have an opportunity in Toronto to compete for a major-league roster spot for the 2025 campaign.

Impact Miami selected the 27-year-old's contract from Triple-A Jacksonville on June 21, and he primarily served as a backup catcher during his time with the big club. Jhonny Pereda is now poised to fill that role after Sanchez posted a .167/.211/.190 slash line in 31 games.

Impact Sanchez will pick up a second consecutive start and could see the majority of the work behind the plate for the foreseeable future after Nick Fortes (quadricep) was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday. The Marlins recalled Jhonny Pereda from Triple-A Jacksonville to provide another option at catcher, but Pereda is a 28-year-old rookie who has just five MLB plate appearances to his name. Sanchez is slashing .180/.255/.180 over his 20 games with the Marlins this season and shouldn't be viewed as a viable fantasy option outside of NL-only leagues.

Impact Sanchez has spent time in three organizations this offseason after being moved off the 40-man rosters of the Tigers, Pirates and Diamondbacks, but he looks set to stick around in Arizona now that he's gone unclaimed off waivers upon being designated for assignment in late December. The 26-year-old will likely be invited to big-league spring training and could get the chance to compete for a spot on the Opening Day roster if Arizona decides to keep a third catcher behind Gabriel Moreno and Carson Kelly.
