Impact DeSclafani served up two solo homers -- both by Paul Goldschmidt -- in his first three innings of work, but those were the only runs the Cardinals managed against him. The right-hander induced 13 swinging strikes and punched out six batters en route to his fourth quality start over his first five outings this season. DeSclafani has been a pleasant surprise for the Giants and his fantasy managers thus far, posting a 2.70 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 27:3 K:BB across 30 innings.

Impact DeSclafani had little issue working through the Royals aside from Salvador Perez's RBI single in the fourth inning. The Giants couldn't get any offense going until the eighth inning, so Desclafani wasn't able to improve to 2-0. He has a stellar 11:0 K:BB while allowing just one run through 12.1 frames across two starts. DeSclafani is projected for a solid matchup in Detroit next weekend.

Impact It was a very strong effort from DeSclafani on an afternoon where he was also provided plenty of run support. The right-hander gave up just one extra-base hit on a double to Yoan Moncada, and he pounded the strike zone while limiting hard contact throughout his six frames. DeSclefani will try and build on this effort in his next scheduled start Sunday against the Royals.

Impact Manaea was available out of the bullpen for the Giants' season-opening weekend series with the Yankees but went unused, and because he had been building up in spring training to compete for a starting role, he could get the opportunity to work in tandem with DeSclafani. Though he enters the season with a rotation spot, DeSclafani was eased into workouts during spring training after he previously underwent ankle surgery last summer, and he didn't work more than four innings in any of his Cactus League outings. With that in mind, manager Gabe Kapler may not be keen on having DeSclafani work deep into Monday's outing, perhaps setting up Manaea to cover multiple innings once DeSclafani exits.

Feels fully healthy DeSclafani (ankle) said Wednesday he is 100 percent healthy and expects to have a bounce-back campaign in 2023, Evan Webeck of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

Impact Ankle surgery ultimately cut DeSclafani's 2022 campaign short after five starts and 19 innings, during which he posted a 6.63 ERA and 2.00 WHIP. The right-hander underwent surgery in July, and while his status is worth monitoring in camp, he should be in the mix for a rotation spot once the season begins. Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports it's possible the Giants could use six starters at times this season, which would make it easier for DeSclafani and other pitchers to get up to speed early in the campaign.
