Humberto Castellanos - Surrenders two in no-decision Castellanos didn't factor into the decision during Sunday's 3-2 loss to the Cubs, allowing two runs on five hits and one walk with five strikeouts in 5.1 innings.
Impact Castellanos served up long balls to Rafael Ortega and Patrick Wisdom to lead off the first and second innings but was able to limit the scoring threats otherwise. Excluding a poor start April 28 against St. Louis, the 24-year-old has surrendered nine runs in 28.1 innings -- good for an impressive 2.81 ERA -- though he's yet to go six innings in any start. Castellanos is slated for a rematch with Chicago next weekend.

Impact Poppen has been sidelined nearly a month by inflammation in his right shoulder, but he'll rejoin the active roster after recently seeing game action at extended spring training. The right-hander pitched well over in first five outings of the season, allowing just one run on four hits with three strikeouts and two walks across six innings.

Daulton Varsho - Continues to rake Varsho served as the designated hitter and went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI in Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Cubs.
Impact Varsho plated a run in the ninth inning, giving Arizona hopes of a comeback that never came. The athletic catcher/outfielder has turned his season around since the end of April. Varsho is batting .341 (15-for-44) with nine extra-base hits, six RBI and seven runs scored over a 12-game stretch. Since he's taken over as the primary catcher while Carson Kelly (oblique) is sidelined, Varsho has been getting days off, but his bat is so important that "days off" from catching could become games in which he serves as the DH.

Nick Ahmed - Still feeling shoulder discomfort Arizona manager Torey Lovullo cited Ahmed's "cranky" right shoulder for the decision to hold him out of Friday's starting lineup, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
Impact Ahmed was in Saturday's lineup, going 1-for-3 with an RBI, but it sounds like the shoulder is and will be an ongoing issue. "My shoulder doesn't feel perfect, but I'm going to try to keep playing through it as long as I can," Ahmed said. "That's kind of all I have to say." Ahmed, who missed the first two weeks of the regular season, returned with a bang, going 8-for-23 with three home runs over his first seven games played. Since then, he's gone 3-for-26 with eight strikeouts, looking much like the same hitter we saw 2021, when he finished with a .224/.280/.339 slash line.

Mark Melancon - Takes fifth loss Melancon (0-5) took the loss during Saturday's 4-2 defeat at the hands of the Cubs, allowing three runs on two hits and two walks while failing to record an out.
Impact Melancon was brought into a tie game in the ninth inning and permitted the first four Cubs to reach base before being pulled. That's now two poor outings in his last three appearances for the 37-year-old, whose ERA jumped to 8.49, and his days as the closer may be numbered.
