Madison Bumgarner - Blames slick baseballs Bumgarner said he had difficulty getting a grip on the baseball Friday because they were slick, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports. Impact Bumgarner issued a season-high five walks Friday, one shy of his career high. "It's not ever fun to try to blame it on something else," Bumgarner said. "I could have been just as bad without it. But the balls was definitely a huge factor for me tonight. I couldn't get a grip on them. They felt a touch different than they usually are." The left-hander also hit a batter, which loaded the bases in the first inning, immediately before walking in a run, only the fifth time during his career that he's walked in a run. For whatever reason, Bumgarner's control has not been sharp over the last three starts, during which he's issued 12 free passes over 17 innings. Prior to that three-start run, he had given up 1.9 BB/9.
