Jordan Luplow - Managing Grade 1 oblique strainManager Torey Lovullo said Wednesday that Luplow has a Grade 1 strain in his oblique, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
ImpactLuplow appeared in six Cactus League games to begin spring training and went 4-for-16 with a home run, two doubles, three RBI, two runs, two walks and two strikeouts. While Lovullo didn't officially rule the outfielder out for Opening Day, the 28-year-old faces a tight timetable with the start of the season just over a week away. The Diamondbacks have several left-handed hitters in the outfield, so Luplow will likely see playing time against right-handed pitchers when he's healthy.

Manuel Rodríguez - Darkhorse candidate for saves?Rodriguez may have an outside chance to close for the Cubs this season with manager David Ross planning on beginning the season with a mixture of pitchers in the ninth-inning role,...
ImpactThere is no quote from Ross in the article directly putting Rodriguez in the endgame conversation. However, Bastian speculates Rodriguez could be in the mix for save chances along with Rowan Wick, David Robertson, Mychal Givens and Chris Martin. Rodriguez mostly struggled in his first cup of coffee in the big time last season, but he averages north of 97 mph on his sinking fastball, so he's at least a name to know.

Rowan Wick - No lock for closing dutiesWick is not a lock for the closer role, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.
ImpactWick is viewed as one of a handful of options to close games for the Cubs this season. Apparently Wick desperately wants the role, as Bastian says "Wick would love nothing more than to earn manager David Ross' trust as the top arm for the ninth inning," but Ross reportedly plans on beginning the season with a mixture of pitchers in that role. Veterans David Robertson, Mychal Givens and Chris Martin were mentioned as alternative candidates along with flamethrowing 25-year-old righty Manuel Rodriguez.

Nick Ahmed - Won't be available for Opening DayAhmed (shoulder) said Wednesday that he recently received a pair of cortisone shots, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
ImpactAhmed has been dealing with shoulder discomfort this week, and he'll be unable to throw or hit for 10 days following his cortisone shots. As a result, the 32-year-old won't be available for Opening Day, but it's not yet clear whether he'll wind up on the injured list to begin the season. Geraldo Perdomo and Sergio Alcantara should fill in at shortstop while Ahmed is sidelined.

Andrelton Simmons - Playing light catchSimmons (shoulder) played light catch Tuesday and will do so again Wednesday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.
ImpactSimmons has been dealing with a sore shoulder recently, and there's some concern that the issue will force him to miss Opening Day. However, the team will determine his next steps based on how he responds to playing catch on back-to-back days.
