What Emmanuel Clase And His Contract Extension Bring To The Guardians' BullpenWhat does Clase and his extension bring to the bullpen?

Taylor Widener - Sent to Triple-AWidener was optioned to Triple-A Reno on Saturday.
ImpactWidener recorded a 4.35 ERA in 70.1 innings as a swingman last season, but his FIP came in at 5.56 thanks in part to an 11.6 percent walk rate. He'll be an option when the Diamondbacks need more pitching depth but will have to make his case for playing time at the Triple-A level for now.

Tyler Gilbert - Won't break camp in big leaguesGilbert was optioned to Triple-A Reno on Saturday.
ImpactGilbert pitched a no-hitter and finished with a 3.15 ERA in 40 innings as a 27-year-old rookie last year, but he won't get the chance to reprise that performance right away. He should be one of Arizona's top options when the team needs more pitching depth, though his 15.9 percent strikeout rate suggests he's unlikely to repeat his strong ERA in his next MLB opportunity.

Triston McKenzie - First outing to come in reliefMcKenzie's first outing of the regular appearance is expected to come in relief, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports.
ImpactThe Guardians kick off the season with a strange series against the Royals, in which they'll play four games spread over five days. McKenzie is expected to piggyback one of the four starters in that series, but he'll likely return to the rotation after that.

Luke Maile - Bound for injured listMaile (hamstring) will open the season on the injured list, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.
ImpactMaile was in camp on a minor-league deal and seemed to have a shot at the backup catcher job, but the hamstring injury he suffered while running the bases in late March put those plans on hold for now. Sandy Leon has also failed to make the team, leaving rookie Bryan Lavastida as the backup behind Austin Hedges.

James Karinchak - Heading to injured listKarinchak (shoulder) will begin the season on the injured list, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.
ImpactKarinchak is currently shut down from throwing as he recovers from a teres muscle strain in his right shoulder. He should resume throwing soon but presumably won't be ready for game action right away. His poor season last year and Emmanuel Clase's emergence put some distance between Karinchak and the closer role, though a bounce-back performance should at least position him to be one of the top options if Clase gets hurt.

Konnor Pilkington - Earns roster spotPilkington has made Cleveland's Opening Day roster, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.
ImpactPilkington has been a starter throughout his minor-league career, but the Guardians don't appear to have a rotation spot open for now, so he'll presumably work in relief. He's yet to pitch above Double-A, but his 3.04 ERA and 30.8 percent strikeout rate in 22 appearances at that level last season suggest he should have the stuff to get major-league hitters out.
