Nelson Cruz - Cracks first Padres homerCruz went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 8-6 loss against the Diamondbacks.
ImpactHe took a poorly-located Zac Gallen fastball over the wall in left field to become the second-oldest player in Padres history with a long ball, per Sarah Langs of MLB.com. The 42-year-old Cruz still has impressive power, but he has not yet made a start against a right-handed pitcher this season (Cruz entered Tuesday's game after Manny Machado was ejected for arguing about a pitch clock violation in the first inning). Expect Cruz to continue seeing most of his starts against lefties for the time being.

Drey Jameson - Earns two-inning saveJameson picked up the save Tuesday against San Diego. He allowed one run on three hits and one walk while striking out two over two innings.
ImpactHe lost the battle for the final rotation spot to Ryne Nelson, but Jameson is having a great opening week regardless as he grabbed his first win of 2023 on Friday and now has his first career save to go with it. The back end of the Arizona bullpen has been shaky early on and Jameson, a top 10 prospect in the organization, could quickly emerge as a go-to option in high leverage. He could also stretch back out into a starter's role at some point.

Yu Darvish - Walks four in season debutDarvish did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing one run on three hits and four walks over five innings in an 8-6 loss to Arizona. He struck out three.
ImpactDue to limited usage in the World Baseball Classic, Darvish's season debut was pushed back as he needed a bit more time to build up his arm. While this wasn't his most dominant outing in terms of whiffs, and his command was spotty at times, Darvish completed five frames on 91 pitches and left with the lead. He will look to build on this performance his next time out in what projects as a road matchup against the Mets.

Zac Gallen - Fans three in no-decisionGallen did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits and one walk over six innings against the Padres. He struck out three.
ImpactHomers allowed to Nelson Cruz and Xander Bogaerts put Arizona in an early hole. It's been a disappointing start to the season for Gallen, who sits with a 7.59 ERA, 1.59 WHIP and 10:4 K:BB through two outings (10.2 innings). He only induced eight swinging strikes on 86 pitches Tuesday. The silver lining here is that he completed six innings after failing to make it out of the fifth on Opening Day. Keep in mind too that the opponents will get easier than the Dodgers and Padres.
