Xander Bogaerts - Homers in nightcapBogaerts went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Game 2 of a twin bill against the Diamondbacks on Saturday.
ImpactBogaerts went 0-for-4 in the matinee but bounced back with a fifth-inning solo homer for the Padres' only run in Game 2. The long ball was just his third in 35 games since the All-Star break, though the shortstop has otherwise hit well over that stretch, slashing .292/.338/.401 with seven RBI, 12 runs and four thefts. Bogaerts has belted a modest 13 home runs this season, with four of them coming over his first 12 contests.

Ha-Seong Kim - Goes deep SaturdayKim went 1-for-8 with a solo home run and a walk across both games of Saturday's doubleheader against Arizona.
ImpactKim had a nice start to the twin bill, leading off the Padres' half of the first inning with a solo shot in Game 1. That was his only hit of the day, though he did work a walk in the nightcap. Since his 16-game hitting streak came to an end Aug. 12, Kim has come back down to earth a bit, slashing .162/.205/.297 over his subsequent nine contests.

Garrett Cooper - Exits after hit by pitchCooper (wrist) was hit by a pitch as a pinch hitter in the ninth inning of the first game and was immediately removed for a pinch runner.
ImpactAfter jamming his wrist Friday and being left out of the starting lineup for Saturday's matinee, Cooper felt well enough to pinch hit with the Padres trying to overcome a 6-4 deficit in the final frame, but he was drilled by a 93.8 mph Paul Sewald fastball just above the left elbow. Cooper was immediately replaced by Jose Azocar on the basepaths, but given that he represented the tying run, manager Bob Melvin might have made that move regardless. Cooper didn't make an appearance in the nightcap, but with San Diego now off Sunday after MLB juggled the schedule due to Hurricane Hilary, the 32-year-old will get a chance to heal up ahead of a home series against the Marlins that's still set to begin Monday.

Manny Machado - Goes yard twice in matineeMachado went 2-for-4 with two solo home runs in a 6-4 loss to the Diamondbacks during the first game of Saturday's doubleheader.
ImpactGetting the start at DH due to accumulated bumps and bruises, including a bout of elbow soreness, Machado's swing seemed to be in peak form as he took Merrill Kelly deep to left field in the first inning before slicing a Kevin Ginkel fastball over the right-field wall in the eighth. Machado was back at third base for the nightcap, and while he went 0-for-4, the fact that he was feeling well enough to play defense is another strong sign his health issues are minor.

Yu Darvish - Fans seven in Saturday's lossDarvish (8-9) took the loss in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Diamondbacks, giving up four runs on nine hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out sev...
ImpactThe veteran right-hander didn't pitch poorly, but San Diego's hitters couldn't get anything going in an eventual 8-1 loss as Arizona used a bullpen day. Darvish remains winless in August, but his 3.60 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 21:4 K:BB through 25 innings on the month have been solid. He'll look for a better result in his next outing, likely to come next weekend in Milwaukee.

Matt Waldron - Stuck with loss in matineeWaldron (0-2) took the loss in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Diamondbacks, giving up five runs on five hits and three walks over five innings. He struck out...
ImpactMaking his second career start in the majors, Waldron had trouble putting Arizona batters away when it mattered and got tagged for runs in the first, third and fifth innings, with the big blow being a two-run shot from Tommy Pham in the right-hander's final frame. Waldron's usage of a knuckleball makes him a bit of a novelty in the modern game and he has yet to allow a hit on the pitch, but through his first 9.2 big-league innings he's surrendered a .923 SLG on his mediocre low-90s fastball.
