Hits first homer of 2020Machado went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer in the Padres' 5-1 win over the Diamondbacks on Saturday.
ImpactMachado had two strikeouts on Opening Day and two more Saturday, but at least he's on the board with his first homer. After batting third in 153 of his 154 starts last season, Machado has hit out of the No. 2 spot in the first two games of 2020, ahead of Tommy Pham.

Doubles in MLB debutOlivares went 1-for-3 with a walk and a double in the Padres' 5-1 win over the Diamondbacks on Saturday.
ImpactThe 24-year-old played right field and hit seventh for the Padres in his big-league debut. He was picked off and caught stealing second base in the sixth inning. Olivares was successful on 35 of 45 attempts at Double-A Amarillo last season and had a .283/.349/.453 line to go with those 35 steals, so he would seem to have some upside if Wil Myers ends up DH'ing more than expected.

Homers against DiamondbacksMyers went 1-for-3 with a walk and a three-run homer in the Padres' 5-1 win over Arizona on Saturday.
ImpactMyers struck out twice on Opening Day but also walked twice, so he's been on base four times through two games. The 29-year-old was in right field for the opener but was the designated hitter Saturday, with Edward Olivares in right.

Labors against PadresRay (0-1) allowed three runs on four hits and three walks while striking out seven over 3.2 innings in a loss to the Padres on Saturday.
ImpactThere was some buzz surrounding Ray given his slimmed-down physique and revamped delivery. Unfortunately, the new delivery and shorter arm action that he showcased in summer camp did not lead to good results in his regular-season debut. In fact, it was more of what we've come to expect from Ray: walks and inefficiency. He needed 97 pitches to record 11 outs. The lefty lines up to face the Dodgers at home next week.

Eight strikeouts in winLamet (1-0) allowed one run on five hits and one walk while striking out eight over five innings in a win over the Diamondbacks on Saturday.
ImpactLamet only threw 73 innings last season in his return from Tommy John surgery. The Padres expect Lamet to be able to take the ball every fifth day throughout the 60-game season, but they were a little cautious Saturday, pulling him after 80 pitches. Fortunately, Lamet maximized those 80 pitches and went deep enough for the win. He's in good position to start the season 2-0 with a road matchup against the Giants on tap for next week.
