Vying for utility roleMathisen started at first base and went 1-for-2 with a double and two RBI in Monday's spring game against San Francisco.
ImpactThe Diamondbacks are evaluating several infielders for a utility role in 2021, with Mathisen getting plenty of at-bats as part of that process. He's made an appearance in each of the last eight Cactus League games, going 5-for-14 with three walks, five RBI and two runs scored. Matheson has served at designated hitter (one game), first base (five) and third base (three). Josh Rojas (7-for-20, 3 HR), Josh VanMeter (2-for-17) and Andrew Young (1-for-12) are in the utility mix as well.

Allows runs againLopez allowed two runs on two hits and a walk over one inning in Monday's spring game against the Giants.
ImpactLopez, who's allowed 1.5 HR/9 (17 homers in 100 innings) during his MLB career, gave up an Evan Longoria long ball before his base on balls came around to score. It was the second time in as many Cactus League games that he's been scored upon. The 28-year-old righty is expected to occupy a role in the final third of games, although last season's 5.95 ERA and 1.53 WHIP suggest he's not a lock to hold that position.

Fires three scorelessYoung allowed two hits and one walk while striking out three over three scoreless innings in Monday's spring game against San Francisco.
ImpactYoung, who followed starter Caleb Smith on Monday, has had a clean spring thus far, working around three hits and a walk while striking out four over five scoreless innings. "One of the things that stands out about him when he's throwing the ball very well is the cleanliness of his innings," manager Torey Lovullo said to Steve Gilbert of MLB.com. "It's just pounding the zone, strike one. You look up and he's walking off, and he's thrown eight or nine pitches." Young is among a trio of pitchers -- along with Corbin Martin and Taylor Clarke -- who could either be depth starters or sneak into the rotation.

Better in second outingSmith allowed one walk while striking out three over three scoreless innings in Monday's spring game against the Giants.
ImpactSmith rebounded from a rough first outing in which he permitted six runs on four hits and two walks. "What stood out to me was a quality change-up," manager Torey Lovullo told Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. "He kept going back to it. He kept reading swings and had a lot of really productive moments with it." Smith has slotted in between Zac Gallen and Madison Bumgarner this spring, suggesting he'll be the Diamondbacks' No. 2 starter.
