Alfonso Rivas - Getting regular work at first baseRivas will start at first base and bat ninth in Monday's game against the Pirates.
ImpactAfter going 3-for-6 with a walk and two runs scored in the Cubs' final two games of their weekend series with Atlanta, Rivas will stick in the lineup for the third contest in a row. He looks like he'll serve as the Cubs' primary first baseman while Frank Schwindel (back) is on the 10-day injured list.

Nelson Velazquez - Recalled from IowaVelazquez was recalled from Triple-A Iowa on Monday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.
ImpactVelazquez spent two days on the big-league roster in late May, going 2-for-7 at the plate. He hasn't been particularly good at the Triple-A level this season, hitting .211/.290/.415 in 34 games while striking out 36.2 percent of the time. That suggests he probably isn't ready for a significant role in the majors just yet, but he'll join the roster nonetheless with teams across the league required to go to 13 pitchers and 13 hitters for the rest of the year. Adrian Sampson was optioned in a corresponding move.

Yan Gomes - Not in Monday's lineupGomes isn't starting Monday against the Pirates.
ImpactGomes went 1-for-4 with two strikeouts during Sunday's series finale against Atlanta and will be held out of the lineup for the second time in the last three games. Willson Contreras is starting behind the dish while Rafael Ortega serves as the designated hitter.

Marcus Stroman - Ready for mound workStroman (shoulder) is expected to throw a bullpen session within the next few days, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports.
ImpactStroman's inflamed right shoulder apparently responded well to playing catch last week, so he's poised to get back on the mound in what will mark the next step forward in his throwing progression. Once Stroman is comfortable using all his pitches during bullpen sessions, he'll advance to facing hitters in live batting practice before throwing a simulated game or heading out on a minor-league rehab assignment.

William Contreras - On bench MondayContreras is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Giants.
ImpactContreras made consecutive starts to close out the weekend series with the Cubs, going 2-for-8 with a double between those games. Travis d'Arnaud and Marcell Ozuna will pick up starts at catcher and designated hitter, respectively, in Monday's contest, and Contreras looks like he'll be behind both on the depth chart for the time being. Even so, Contreras should continue to pick up a handful of starts per week while he keeps swinging the bat well.

Adrian Sampson - Optioned to Triple-ASampson was optioned to Triple-A Iowa on Monday, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports.
ImpactSampson spent four days on the active roster in his latest stint with the Cubs. His lone appearance came against Atlanta on Sunday, when he tossed 4.2 scoreless innings of relief while striking out five and allowing one baserunner. While that outing was excellent, he'll presumably be unavailable for the next few days, so he'll return to the minors for now.
