Cedric Mullins - Homers and steals base Mullins went 2-for-4 with one homer, three RBI, one run scored and one steal in Saturday's 9-8 loss against the Red Sox.

Impact Mullins hit a three-run homer in the third to give the Orioles a 7-1 lead. That's the first blast of the season for the outfielder, and the steal also represents a first for the 2023 campaign. Mullins provided plenty of value with 34 thefts in the 2022 campaign, but after hitting just 16 homers during that campaign, it's nice to see some early power production.

Jorge Mateo - Steals two more bags Mateo went 0-for-4 with one RBI, one run scored and two steals in Saturday's loss to the Red Sox.

Impact The Orioles have been running rampant against the Red Sox in the first two games of the series as they've already picked up 10 steals in those contests. Mateo has four of those steals, as he's swiped two bags in back-to-back games. There's very little offensive upside in the other categories, but Mateo definitely should again be a major contributor with steals because of his impressive speed.

Ryan Mountcastle - Homers off of Sale Mountcastle went 2-for-5 with a two-run homer and two runs scored in a loss to the Red Sox on Saturday.

Impact Mountcastle hit the first of three homers off Chris Sale with a two-run shot off the southpaw in the first inning. He also singled and came around to score on a double by Anthony Santander. It's a strong start to the season for Mountcastle, who is going to get plenty of RBI chances hitting behind Adley Rutschman to open the year.

Impact Bautista should have picked up his second save of the season, but Ryan McKenna dropped a flyball with two outs, and Adam Duvall took the right-hander deep to give Boston the victory and Bautista his first loss and blown save of the young season. It's disappointing for managers who roster the hard-throwing 27-year-old to pick up the loss and no save, but the runs being unearned won't hurt his ERA.

Impact Hays came just short of the cycle, as he doubled in his final chance and decided not to take a chance on the bases. The homer came off Chris Sale in the first inning, and it's the first of the season. Hays was solid in the Grapefruit League after a disappointing 2022 season, and the success has carried over to begin the 2023 campaign.

Dean Kremer - Ineffective against Boston Kremer didn't factor into the decision after allowing five runs over three innings in his start Saturday against the Red Sox.

Impact Kremer was provided with plenty of run support with the Orioles scoring seven runs against Chris Sale while he was on the mound, but he wasn't able to work deep enough to qualify for a decision. The right-hander gave up two homers in the contest -- one to Adam Duvall, one to Alex Verdugo -- and he walked one with three strikeouts while allowing six hits in a mediocre effort. He's scheduled to be back on the mound Thursday in a start against the Yankees.

Grayson Rodriguez - Starting in Triple-A Norfolk opener Rodriguez is starting for Triple-A Norfolk in their season opener Friday against Triple-A Durham, Rich Dubroff of BaltimoreBaseball.com reports.

Impact Rodriguez did not ultimately claim a spot in the Orioles' Opening Day rotation after struggling to a 7.04 ERA across 15.1 innings (five starts) this spring in the Grapefruit League. But the 23-year-old should again dominate the competition at the Triple-A level en route to an early-season promotion to Baltimore. He posted a 2.20 ERA with 97 strikeouts over 69.2 innings (14 starts) for Norfolk last year.

Adam Frazier - Impressive in Baltimore debut Frazier went 2-for-4 with two doubles, a walk, a stolen base and three runs scored in Thursday's 10-9 win over the Red Sox.

Impact Frazier's power was virtually non-existent with the Mariners last year -- he had just three home runs, 22 doubles and a career-worst .311 slugging percentage in 156 games. Getting out of Seattle should help his bat a bit, though he's never had more than 10 homers in a season. The 31-year-old is expected to see most of his time at second base in 2023, but he can also play in the corner outfield, so he should be in the lineup more often than not.

Impact Urias went yard in the fourth inning to help the Orioles establish a lead in the contest. The 28-year-old displayed solid power last year with 16 homers and a .414 slugging percentage over 118 contests. He's expected to fill a versatile role in the Orioles' infield this season, though hot hitting out of the gate could help him stay in the lineup regularly.

The shortstop had 35 steals in 2022, so it's not a huge surprise to see him active on the basepaths, especially with new rules incentivizing steals. The bigger issue for Mateo may be getting on base -- he hit .221 with a .267 on-base percentage last season. The 27-year-old should at least see a majority of the starts at shortstop to begin the campaign. He's a strong defender, though a ninth-inning error Thursday made this game closer than it had to be.

Mullins has reached the 30-steal mark in each of the last two seasons, and MLB's rule changes for this season should encourage him to continue running frequently. He hit .240 with three RBI during spring training, and he also served as a reserve on Team USA at the World Baseball Classic. Mullins enters 2023 poised to continue serving as the Orioles' leadoff hitter and starting center fielder, and if the lineup behind him has improved, he may be in a position to rack up more runs than the 89 he posted in 156 games a year ago.
