Impact Gamel joins the roster one day after getting claimed off waivers from Cleveland. The Pirates could certainly use help in their outfield, as only Bryan Reynolds has an above-average batting line this season among the team's outfield regulars, but it's not clear that Gamel can provide that help. He's posted a wRC+ north of 100 in just one of his six seasons in the majors. Todd Frazier was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.

Impact Th 28-year-old was designated for assignment by Cleveland earlier in the week, and he didn't make it far down the waiver order before being claimed. Gamel won't immediately join the Pirates but is expected to be in uniform for his new team Monday.

Impact The 28-year-old was optioned to the alternate training site in mid-April and has now been removed from Cleveland's 40-man roster. Gamel spent the first couple weeks of the season in the majors and went 1-for-14 in 11 appearances.

Impact Gamel had minimal time in the starting lineup to begin the season and hit .071 with a double and one run in 17 plate appearances. He'll now be removed from the major-league roster after left-hander Sam Hentges was recalled from the alternate training site in a corresponding move.

Impact The lefty-hitting Gamel's absence from the lineup for the first two games of the series wasn't a surprise with southpaws Derek Holland and Tarik Skubal making starts for Detroit, but the outfielder will be taking a seat Sunday with right-hander Jose Urena on the bump for the Tigers. Meanwhile, Amed Rosario will be making his third straight start in center field, perhaps signaling that manager Terry Francona has at least temporarily elected to abandon the platoon of Gamel and Jordan Luplow at the position.
