Giants' Sean Manaea, Blake Sabol bond over shared Samoan heritage If Sabol can make the Giants' roster as a Rule 5 player, he and Manaea could form the first all-Samoan battery in MLB history.
Will be used as catcher Sabol is being viewed as a catcher in Giants' camp, manager Gabe Kapler told Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle on Wednesday.
Impact Sabol played all over the diamond in college and has split time pretty evenly between catcher and the outfield in the minors, but the Giants plan to use him exclusively behind the plate, at least for now. The 25-year-old was taken by the Reds in the Rule 5 Draft this winter before being flipped to the Giants. He must be carried on the Giants' roster or be offered back to the Pirates.

Sent to San Francisco Sabol was acquired by the Giants from the Reds on Wednesday in exchange for cash considerations and a player to be named later, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Impact The Reds selected Sabol from the Pirates during the Rule 5 draft Wednesday, and he'll now join the Giants for a big-league opportunity. The 24-year-old split the 2022 campaign between the Double-A and Triple-A levels and had a .284/.363/.497 slash line with 19 home runs and 10 stolen bases in 123 games.

Chosen by Reds Sabol was selected by the Reds with the fourth overall pick in the 2022 Rule 5 draft, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports.
Impact Sabol's value is bolstered by his ability to play in the outfield and at catcher, and his abilities were enough to land him a spot on the Reds' 40-man roster after spending last year in the Pirates organization. Over 123 appearances between Double-A Altoona and Triple-A Indianapolis last season, he slashed .284/.363/.497 with 19 home runs, 75 RBI, 74 runs and 10 stolen bases.
