Garrett Whitlock - Suffers loss SundayWhitlock (8-4) allowed one run on one hit while striking out two over two-thirds of an inning in a loss to the White Sox on Sunday.
ImpactWhitlock came in to try and extend the game to extra innings after the Red Sox tied it up in the top of the ninth but was unable to do so. The 25-year-old struck out the first two batters he faced before Leury Garcia connected on an 0-2 fastball and sent it over the wall in center field to walk it off for the White Sox. Whitlock has now given up at least a run in three of his last four outings but still has been pretty effective overall. He has a 1.92 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 78:16 K:BB over 70.1 innings to go along with two saves and 13 holds. The Red Sox clearly trust him in high-leverage situations and should continue to use him in those situations during the final stretch of the regular season.

Nick Pivetta - Strong outing in return to actionPivetta allowed one run (zero earned) on three hits while striking out five over 5.1 innings in a no-decision against the White sox on Sunday.
ImpactPivetta made his first start since Aug. 30 after spending some time on the COVID injured list. He held the White Sox scoreless through five innings before the leadoff man in the sixth reached on a throwing error. A sacrifice bunt would move him over to second and then Luis Robert singled him home. It was a very positive outing for the 28-year-old after giving up four runs in each of his last three starts. Pivetta also managed to not walk a batter in a start for the first time since May 14. The right-hander now owns a 4.49 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 156:62 K:BB over 140.1 innings. He lines up to face the Orioles in Boston next weekend.

Lance Lynn - Dazzles in return to moundLynn allowed just two hits and struck out nine over five innings Sunday against the Red Sox. He did not factor into the decision.
ImpactLynn pitched for the first time since Aug. 28 after a brief stint on the injured list and showcased some of his best stuff of the season. The 34-year-old did not issue any free passes. He had 13 swings and misses to strike out nine batters, his highest total since July 2. He was pulled after throwing just 70 pitches despite being in a nice groove. Lynn now owns a 2.50 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 161:42 K:BB over 140.2 innings. He lines up for a very favorable matchup against the Rangers next weekend.

Craig Kimbrel - Blows save, earns winKimbrel (4-4) allowed one run on one hit and two walks while striking out two in the ninth inning to earn the win over the Red Sox on Sunday.
ImpactKimbrel was called upon to close the game out rather than Liam Hendriks and could not get the job done. He allowed a leadoff double before eventually walking two batters to load the bases. The Red sox would end up tying the game at one apiece on a sacrifice fly by Alex Verdugo before Kimbrel punched out Bobby Dalbec to get out of the inning. Fortunately, the White Sox would end up walking it off in the bottom half of the frame to give Kimbrel the win. The 33-year-old has now blown back-to-back save chances but still owns a solid 2.18 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 91:20 K:BB over 53.2 innings.
