Alex Verdugo - Sitting versus leftyVerdugo is out of the lineup for Thursday's game at Kansas City, Joel Goldberg of Bally Sports Kansas City reports.
ImpactVerdugo started the past 25 games and posted a .603 OPS during that stretch, and he'll take a seat Thursday with southpaw Kris Bubic pitching for the Royals. Jaylin Davis will start in right field and bat leadoff.

Kyle Tucker - Dealing with illnessTucker was removed from Thursday's lineup against the Guardians due to an illness, Julia Morales of AT&T SportsNet Southwest reports.
ImpactTucker was scratched from the lineup a few hours before the start of Thursday's matchup, and Aledmys Diaz joined the lineup as the starting left fielder. Manager Dusty Baker hopes that Tucker will be able to return to the lineup as early as Friday against Cleveland, so the outfielder should be considered day-to-day, according to Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle.

Eric Hosmer - Batting sixth in team debutBoston activated Hosmer (neck) on Thursday and will deploy him as its starting first baseman and No. 6 hitter in the team's series opener in Kansas City, Jen McCaffrey of The Athle...
ImpactBefore he was dealt to Boston on Tuesday, Hosmer had missed his last game as a member of the Padres due to a neck strain. The injury was never considered anything more than a minor issue, and Hosmer should be poised to take over as the Boston's everyday first baseman moving forward. The righty-hitting Bobby Dalbec may occasionally spell Hosmer against left-handed pitching, but the quality defense Hosmer brings at first base might still be enough for him to earn regular work versus southpaws, as will be the case Thursday with Kris Bubic on the hill for Kansas City.

Matt Barnes - Officially reinstated ThursdayBarnes (shoulder) was activated from the 60-day injured list Thursday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ImpactBarnes has been sidelined by the shoulder issue since late May and has been cleared to rejoin the big-league roster after an eight-game rehab assignment in the minors. The veteran right-hander surrendered seven earned runs across 7.2 innings with Triple-A Worcester and Double-A Portland. Barnes had a 7.94 ERA, 1.71 WHIP and 14:12 K:BB across 17 frames prior to the injury and will likely fill a low-leverage role now that he's healthy.

Darwinzon Hernandez - Back in big leaguesThe Red Sox recalled Hernandez from Triple-A Worcester on Thursday.
ImpactHe provides Boston with a fresh arm out of the bullpen after starter Rich Hill covered only three innings in Wednesday's 6-1 loss in Houston, leaving four relievers to cover the remaining five frames. Two of those relievers -- Brayan Bello (groin) and Kaleb Ort -- were placed on the 15-day injured list and optioned to Triple-A, respectively -- to clear room on the active roster for Hernandez, who is likely to serve as a low-leverage arm.

Brayan Bello - Goes on IL with groin strainThe Red Sox placed Bello (groin) on the 15-day injured list Thursday.
ImpactBello suffered the injury during his relief appearance in Wednesday's 6-1 loss to the Astros, when the Red Sox intended to deploy him as a piggyback pitcher behind starter Rich Hill. He'll now be sidelined for at least the next two and a half weeks, and once he's activated, Bello may not have a spot on the active roster, much less one in the rotation. Hill's return from the IL on Wednesday gave Boston five healthy starting options, and Michael Wacha (shoulder) could be activated by the middle of August and will push Bello another rung down the depth chart at that time.

Kaleb Ort - Sent to minorsOrt was optioned to Triple-A Worcester on Thursday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ImpactThe 30-year-old has been up in the majors for the past month but will head to Triple-A with Matt Barnes (shoulder) returning from the 60-day IL. In 10 major-league appearances this season Ort has a 9.49 ERA, 2.03 WHIP and 12:6 K:BB across 12.1 innings.
