Impact Hector Neris has been the Phillies' primary closer lately, but after he held the Nats scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings, Workman got the call in the eighth and once again failed to get the job done. The right-hander has blown three of his eight save chances since coming over from the Red Sox and given up homers in three of his last four appearances. With the Phillies' playoff chances suddenly in freefall after being swept in Tuesday's twin bill, Workman may be kept far away from any leads the team does build over the final days of the season.

Knocked around in loss Workman (0-1) took the loss against the Mets on Thursday, retiring only one batter while allowing three runs on three hits and striking out one.

Impact Workman entered the contest in the ninth inning with the score knotted at six and surrendered a home run to Brandon Nimmo on the second pitch of his outing. He was unable to settle down thereafter, allowing two more hits -- including a run-scoring triple -- before exiting the contest. While Workman has converted five of six save opportunities since joining Philadelphia, he has been far from the shutdown closer the Phillies had hoped for. Over 11 appearances with the team, Workman has allowed eight earned runs and 18 hits over 10.1 innings while posting a troublesome 11:8 K:BB.

Blows save opportunity Workman (1-2) took the loss and blew the save against Miami on Thursday, pitching one inning and allowing one run on three hits and two walks while striking out one.

Impact Workman was called upon to protect a three-run lead in the bottom of the eighth inning with the bases loaded. He allowed all three inherited runners to score on a Starling Marte double, then walked Jesus Aguilar before registering his first out. The shaky outing continued in the ninth when Workman gave up the winning run on a pair of singles and a walk. Since joining the Phillies on Aug. 21, Workman has successfully converted five of seven save chances while surrendering five earned runs and issuing a concerning eight walks in 10.1 innings.

Impact It was hardly a proficient performance as he delivered only nine of his 19 pitches for strikes, but the right-hander was able to keep the Braves off the board all the same. Workman has now made five appearances since being acquired by the Phillies on Aug. 21, and he's converted three of four save chances with two runs allowed on 10 hits and four walks while striking out six over 5.1 innings. Overall this season he has a 4.09 ERA and 2.18 WHIP over 12 outings between Boston and Philadelphia.

Dansby Swanson was out on a play at the plate, which prevented Workman from blowing his second save chance since he was traded from the Red Sox. Workman hasn't made it easy, allowing eight baserunners in 2.1 innings with the Phillies. He was brought in to be the closer, but Hector Neris could continue getting looks if Workman doesn't clean up his pitching.

Hector Neris started the eighth inning protecting a 4-2 lead but immediately gave up three straight hits and a run before recording an out. Workman then got the call to replace him and gave up a two-run double to Matt Adams on his first pitch to blow the save. The Phillies rallied in the top of the ninth to tie things up, but the right-hander then finished the job with a messy bottom of the frame that saw him load the bases before Adam Duvall delivered a walkoff single. It's not clear whether manager Joe Girardi will turn to Neris or Workman in the next save situation, but the former Boston closer could hardly have made a worse first impression on his new skipper.
