Productive again Wednesday Reynolds went 1-for-3 with a walk, a double, a run scored, an RBI and a stolen base in Wednesday's 4-1 win over the Red Sox.

Impact The 28-year-old has hit safely in six straight games to begin the season, going 10-for-24 (.417) with two doubles, four homers, six runs and seven RBI, but Wednesday's pilfer was his first of the year. Reynolds went 7-for-10 in that category in 2022, but he's one of the players who could see a significant bump in steals this season thanks to MLB's rule changes to boost the running game.

Impact That's three home runs in the last two days for Reynolds, who is in the midst of contract extension talks with the Pirates. He touched up Kutter Crawford for the pair of long balls and is off to a very productive start to the season, hitting .353 with four runs, four RBI and three home runs through 18 plate appearances.

Impact Reynolds has been in the news due to his ongoing contract negotiations with the Pirates, he set that aside to slug his first homer of the season. He's had an average start to the new season, collecting three hits across 12 at-bats while striking out only twice.

Money agreed to, but opt-out hurdle The inclusion of an opt-out clause is the sticking point in contract extension negotiations between Reynolds and the Pirates, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic reports.

Impact The good news is the two sides have come to an agreement on the financial terms of a long-term deal with a package of about $106 million, Biertempfel says. Reynolds has expressed a willingness to back-load the contract and because he's also relented more than the club on the dollar ask, he wants the Pirates to include an opt-out clause. Pittsburgh has historically been opposed to including opt-outs in contracts, but it's possible they might make an exception here. Biertempfel intimates that the Pirates might like to have a deal in place prior to their home opener on April 7. Reynolds -- who is currently under team control through 2025 -- requested a trade back in December when negotiations fell apart, but it seems there's real momentum for a deal now if the two sides can overcome the opt-out hurdle.

Starting in LF on Opening Day Manager Derek Shelton said Reynolds will start in left field in the Pirates' season opener Thursday versus the Reds, Justice delos Santos of MLB.com reports.

Impact The Pirates had indicated with their words and also actions this spring that Reynolds was likely shifting over to left field, which allows Jack Suwinski to handle center. Though Reynolds projects to see the bulk of his starts in left this season, Shelton noted that the 28-year-old could play center on some days. The Pirates are reportedly still trying to sign Reynolds to a contract extension following his offseason trade request.

Using heavier bat Reynolds has been using a heavier bat during spring training to try to improve his timing, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Impact Reynolds is using a bat with a larger handle to counterbalance the weight. It's unclear exactly how long he's opted for the new style of bat, though he's homered in consecutive games after going yard in Sunday's Grapefruit League game against Atlanta. While he requested a trade this offseason, Reynolds will be the leader of Pittsburgh's outfield so long as he remains with the team.
