Zachary Silver of MLB.com reports Martinez was able to deploy all five of his pitches with success and noted manager Mike Shildt remarked there's a "really good chance" the veteran right-hander opens the regular season as the No. 3 starter, although the status of Kwang Hyun Kim (back) for his first scheduled turn through the rotation is expected to play an integral role in whether that comes to fruition.

However, Martinez made up for some lost time this winter, opting to play in the Dominican Republic for the first time since the 2014-15 offseason and posting a 1-0 record and 1.84 ERA in three starts while working on refining his pitch combinations. Battery mate Yadier Molina went 0-for-3 against Martinez while facing him in the Caribbean Series and noted the pitcher looked stronger and more poised on the mound. Despite the momentum he carries into spring camp, Martinez will still be challenged to carve out a rotation spot, considering there is only one vacancy at present and the promising Alex Reyes remains very much in the mix for it.

Impact Initial reports indicating that Martinez would be facing legal trouble for hosting a large gathering in violation of the country's COVID-19 protocols, but both the pitcher's agent and the Cardinals denied those allegations. He does appear to have taken part in the event but is not facing any charges. The incident appears to have disappointed his team, which put out a statement which reads, in part, "Certainly, we would not condone anyone from our organization knowingly violating community laws or health regulations," but he doesn't appear to be facing any long-term consequences.
