Throws bullpen session Mize (elbow) threw a bullpen session Wednesday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.

Impact Wednesday marks Mize's first bullpen session since undergoing Tommy John surgery last June. He only threw fastballs and still has a long way to go before making his return, though it remains possible that he'll be able to pitch before the end of the year.

Impact Mize, who is working his way back from June 2022 Tommy John surgery as well as back surgery, had his rehab program shut down about three weeks ago after experiencing back discomfort. Fortunately, the setback wasn't a major one, as Mize resumed throwing a week later. He'll likely to gradually increase the distance of his throwing sessions before potentially advancing to mound work by the end of June. An August or September return from the 60-day injured list remains realistic for Mize, though it's unclear if he'll have sufficient time to build back up for a starting role.

Beginning throwing program Mize (elbow/back) is scheduled to begin a throwing progression this week, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.

Impact According to Evan Woodbery of MLive.com, Mize underwent a previously undisclosed back surgery last summer, around the same time he had his Tommy John surgery in June. Mize's recovery from the back procedure delayed the start of his throwing program, but the fact that he's been cleared to start playing catch this week suggests that rehabbing the surgically repaired elbow is the greater concern at this juncture. Even if he avoids any setbacks with his back and/or elbow, he'll still be sidelined for most, if not all, of the 2023 season while he embarks on a long rehab program. Mize is still likely at least a couple months away from facing hitters, and until he's able to reach that phase of his recovery, the Tigers aren't expected to offer a target date for him to resume pitching in games.
