INJURIES

Moves to injured list De Jong was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with left knee inflammation, Jake Crouse of MLB.com reports.
Impact The right-hander was struck on the knee by a liner during Monday's loss to Arizona, which figures to be how the issue arose. He'll be eligible to come off the injured list July 30, but it's not yet clear if he'll be forced to miss additional time. The Pirates figure to provide an update on De Jong in the coming days.

Handed loss Monday De Jong (1-4) took the loss Monday against the Diamondbacks after allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out six over five innings.
Impact Although he gave up seven hits, all four runs De Jong surrendered came via the long ball. He allowed Pavin Smith and Josh Van Meter to go back-to-back in the second and then later Eduardo Escobar launched a two-run shot in the fifth to make it 4-0. The 27-year-old has now given up at least four runs in four of his last five starts and has given up multiple home runs in back-to-back. One positive was he tied his season-high in strikeouts but otherwise was unimpressive. De Jong now sports a 5.77 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and a 39:19 K:BB over 43.2 innings. He's in line for a matchup against the Brewers next week.

Ugly first inning in no-decision De Jong allowed five runs on four hits and three walks with three strikeouts in five innings, taking a no-decision versus the Mets on Sunday.
Impact The right-hander allowed a two-run home run to Francisco Lindor and a three-run blast to Michael Conforto in the first inning. After the nightmarish start, De Jong was able to settle in, and the Pirates ultimately got him off the hook when they rallied ahead in the ninth. He's still struggled to an unimpressive 5.59 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 33:17 K:BB across 38.2 innings spanning eight starts this year.

Finally gets in win column De Jong (1-3) picked up the win in Monday's 11-1 rout of Atlanta, allowing one run on four hits and three walks over five innings. He struck out four.
Impact The Pirates had scored only eight runs in total over the last four games De Jong started, but this time, they gave him more than enough run support to get into the win column. The right-hander threw 92 pitches (54 strikes) before exiting, and he has yet to pitch more than five innings in any of his seven trips to the mound. De Jong sports a 5.08 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 30:14 K:BB through 33.2 innings, and he's lined up to get one more start before the All-Star break, which will come on the road against the Mets this weekend.

Takes loss Tuesday De Jong (0-3) took the loss against Colorado on Tuesday, pitching five innings and allowing five runs on nine hits and no walks while striking out three.
Impact Opposing starter German Marquez hurled a one-hit gem for Colorado, so De Jong never had much of a chance in his bid for his first big-league win since 2018. He fell behind 2-0 after two innings and was tagged for three more runs in the fifth en route to his third loss of the campaign. The right-hander did tie his season high with five innings, but that was accompanied by tying his season-worst mark by allowing five earned runs. De Jong will carry an unappealing 5.65 ERA into his next start, which is currently scheduled to come at home against Atlanta early next week.
JUNE 30, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Struggles in loss De Jong (0-2) allowed four runs on seven hits, striking out six and walking two in 4.2 innings of work. He was tagged with the loss in Wednesday's 4-3 defeat against the White Sox.
Impact The righty was very inefficient, allowing traffic on the bases in all but one of his innings and requiring 95 pitches to get through 4.2 frames. Wednesday marked a step backwards for De Jong after he allowed one and two runs in his previous two starts, respectively. The six strikeouts were a season-high for De Jong, though. He's expected to make his next start Monday at Coors Field.
JUNE 23, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Takes tough loss to Nats De Jong (0-1) took the loss Wednesday as the Pirates were downed 3-1 by the Nationals, allowing one run on four hits and two walks over four innings. He struck out five.
Impact The right-hander served up a solo shot to Yan Gomes in the second inning but was otherwise sharp, tossing 44 of 71 pitches for strikes. Unfortunately he exited in a 1-0 hole, and the Bucs weren't able to tie it up and get De Jong off the hook for the loss. He has yet to last more than five innings in any of his four starts, but De Jong will take a 4.26 ERA and 17:9 K:BB through 19 innings into his next outing.
JUNE 17, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Walks four in no-decision De Jong allowed two runs on four hits and four walks over five innings in Friday's loss to Milwaukee. He struck out two and did not factor in the decision.
Impact De Jong gave up a pair of runs in the second inning but settled in and ended with a respectable outing. He issued four of the 11 walks given up by Pittsburgh's arms in Friday's loss. The 27-year-old now owns a 4.80 ERA after giving up seven runs over 10 innings in his last two starts. De Jong is lined up to start in Washington next week.

Impact De Jong didn't have his best stuff Saturday and particularly struggled with the long ball, as he allowed three in just five innings. The right-hander owns a 10:3 K:BB over his first two outings of the campaign, but it's clear this is an outing he'd like to leave behind as soon as possible. He could make another start next week, though it will depend on whether JT Brubaker (personal) appears on track to return from the bereavement list or not.

Gets second start De Jong is scheduled to start Saturday's game against the Marlins, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
Impact JT Brubaker (personal) doesn't appear on track to return from the bereavement list this week, so De Jong will be called upon to make a second straight spot start in his stead. De Jong acquitted himself well in his 2021 debut last weekend against the Rockies, working five innings while striking out five and giving up one run on three hits and two walks in a no-decision.
JUNE 2, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
On track for another start De Jong is a candidate to make another start for the Pirates, Jake Crouse of mlb.com reports.
Impact General manager Ben Cherington said Sunday that he hopes De Jong will get another shot in the rotation. "I think our hope is that we have a little bit of a runway now," Cherington said. "We wanted to have some confidence about that because he obviously wasn't on the roster. He is now. He is out of options. We hope that there's an opportunity for him." With Chad Kuhl, JT Brubaker and Trevor Cahill all soon expected back in the rotation, De Jong will need to once again impress in his next outing. The 27-year-old was in line for a win Sunday until Richard Rodriguez suffered his first blown save of 2021.
MAY 31, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Whiffs five in no-decision De Jong allowed one run on three hits and two walks while striking out five in five innings during Sunday's loss to the Rockies. He didn't factor into the decision.
Impact De Jong was in line for the win when he left Sunday's contest since he only allowed one run via a triple in the top of the fourth inning. However, the Rockies put together a late rally, so De Jong was forced to settle for a no-decision in his 2021 debut. If De Jong remains in the rotation, he tentatively lines up to make his next start at home against the Marlins on Saturday.
MAY 31, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Heads to free agency De Jong cleared waivers Friday and elected free agency, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
Impact De Jong threw 7.1 innings for the Astros this season, allowing 12 runs. The poor performance raised his career ERA to 7.12 in 54.1 frames spread over the last four years. That will presumably leave him searching for a minor-league deal on the open market.
OCTOBER 30, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Sputters against Rangers De Jong (0-1) allowed six runs on six hits and two walks while striking out six over 3.2 innings Sunday as he was charged with the loss against the Rangers.
Impact De Jong was initially expected to start Saturday, but his final start of the regular season was pushed back to Sunday. He gave up just one run over the first three innings, but he struggled mightily in the fourth inning before he was pulled. The right-hander posted a 14.78 ERA over 7.1 innings in 2020, and he's unlikely to play a significant role for the Astros during the postseason.
SEPTEMBER 28, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Starting season finale De Jong will start Sunday's game against the Rangers, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Impact The 26-year-old originally lined up to start Saturday's contest, but the Astros instead put Lance McCullers on the mound, likely to better situate him to pitch during the opening round of the playoffs. De Jong covered three innings during his previous start this season and seems unlikely to pitch much deeper than that Sunday.
SEPTEMBER 27, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Not starting Saturday Do Jong won't start Saturday against the Rangers as previously expected but could be the first pitcher in what may be a bullpen game Sunday, Jake Kaplan of The Athletic reports.
Impact Previous reports indicated the Astros would turn to De Jong on Saturday if they clinched a playoff spot Friday, which they did. They've evidently changed plans, however, and will give Lance McCullers a brief start Saturday. The team has yet to commit to a starter for Sunday's season finale, but De Jong is likely to factor in at some point even if he doesn't start the contest.
SEPTEMBER 26, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Expected to start Saturday Houston manager Dusty Baker said De Jong would start Saturday if the Astros clinched a playoff spot Friday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
Impact As it turned out, the Astros clinched despite losing to the Rangers on Friday. It was the Dodgers' victory over the Angels later in the night that pushed Houston into the postseason. De Jong, who was called up Friday when Josh James (undisclosed) was placed on the injured list, is expected to at least open Saturday's game. It's unclear how many innings De Jong has in him.
SEPTEMBER 26, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Optioned to alternate site De Jong was optioned to the Astros' taxi squad Tuesday, Jake Kaplan of The Athletic reports.
Impact De Jong has pitched poorly in both of his appearances this season, allowing six runs in 3.2 innings of work. He'll remain an occasional low-leverage option down the stretch but is unlikely to step into a fantasy-relevant role.
SEPTEMBER 9, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Avoids loss as opener De Jong allowed four runs on five hits and one walk while striking out three in a no-decision in the second game of a doubleheader against Oakland on Tuesday.
Impact De Jong was the opener in a bullpen game and avoided the loss when Houston plated four runs in the fourth inning after he gave up four to the Athletics in the bottom of the third. De Jong was needed to supplement the rotation, as the Astros played two doubleheaders in the span of four days. The 26-year-old has allowed six runs on six hits and two walks over 3.2 innings.
SEPTEMBER 9, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Starting Game 2 De Jong will start Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the A's, Jake Kaplan of The Athletic reports.
Impact The Astros will employ a bullpen game for the nightcap after Zack Greinke started Game 1, and De Jong will be the first hurler in Game 2. The 27-year-old allowed two runs on one hit and one walk while recording two outs during his lone appearance of the season in late August.
