Impact After converting the Cubs' last save opportunity, Hughes was called upon to protect a 2-1 lead in the eighth inning. He recorded a lineout followed by a walk and a double play to retire the Phillies but was pulled after allowing a leadoff single in the ninth inning. Manuel Rodriguez quickly recorded three outs to end the game and earn Hughes his seventh hold. Since the team traded David Robertson on Aug 2, manager David Ross has followed somewhat of a closer-by-committee approach, leading to Hughes recording four saves and four holds in the month of September.

Impact Morel grooved a first pitch slider from Phillies ace Zack Wheeler 374 feet to right field for his 15th long ball of the season. Marcus Stroman - Seven innings in win Stroman (5-7) earned the win Tuesday, allowing one run on four hits and one walk with six strikeouts over seven innings in a 2-1 victory over the Phillies.
Impact Stroman held the Phillies in check most of the night as the only damage came via an RBI double off the bat of Bryce Harper in the sixth inning. The veteran has thrown seven innings in two of his last three starts and recorded a quality start in all three of those. Over his last 10 starts, Stroman owns a healthy 3.25 ERA but only two wins. He next tentatively lines up to face Cincinnati this weekend.

Impact Injuries have been an issue for Madrigal in all three of his big-league seasons, and this year a couple different issues limited him to only 59 games. He will finish 2022 with just a .587 OPS, but he did hit an even .300 in August -- the month in which he recorded over a third of his at-bats. Madrigal should be back at 100 percent well in advance of spring training, and he figures to get a chance to compete for a starting job at second base.
