Frank Schwindel - Garners fifth straight startSchwindel will start at first base and bat cleanup in Monday's game against the Pirates.
ImpactChicago got rookie Seiya Suzuki back Saturday after a three-game absence, but Schwindel looks like he'll have a good case for sticking around in an everyday role at designated hitter over Rafael Ortega, his primary competition for work at that spot in the lineup. Both Schwindel and Ortega will stay in the starting nine Monday while lefty-hitting regulars Alfonso Rivas and Jason Heyward check out of the lineup against Pirates southpaw Dillon Peters, but Schwindel probably offers more upside as a hitter than Ortega against right-handed pitching. While starting in each of the Cubs' last four games, Schwindel went 5-for-15 with a double and three RBI.

Rafael Ortega - Starts, but role likely to decreaseOrtega will start in center field and bat ninth in Monday's game against the Pirates.
ImpactAfter slugging his first home run of the season and extending his RBI streak to three games in Sunday's 3-2 win over the Diamondbacks, Ortega sticks in the lineup Monday for the fifth time in six contests. Now that Seiya Suzuki (ankle) is back in action after a recent multi-game absence, Ortega will likely be the odd man out in the Cubs outfield for a regular role against right-handed pitching.

Patrick Wisdom - Draws seventh straight startWisdom will start at third base and bat sixth in Monday's game against the Pirates.
ImpactAfter opening the Cubs' weekend series in Arizona with six strikeouts in eight plate appearances in the first two games of the series, he broke out of his funk by going 2-for-4 with a solo home run, a double and an additional run in Sunday's 3-2 win. Wisdom still struck out twice during the contest, and his boom-or-bust profile is expected to continue to make him a sinkhole in the batting average category. That being said, Wisdom will stick in the lineup Monday for the seventh game in a row, and he appears to have a good chance at holding down a regular role in the infield over the ice-cold Jonathan Villar once the Cubs get one of Nick Madrigal (back) or Nico Hoerner (ankle) back from the injured list. Dating back to April 26, Villar is hitting .105 with a 38.5 percent strikeout rate.

Ildemaro Vargas - Likely to move into utility roleVargas is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Pirates.
ImpactVargas had started each of the Cubs' last three games at shortstop, going 2-for-9 with a triple, a walk, two RBI and a run during that stretch. He'll likely move into a utility role now that Andrelton Simmons (shoulder) -- who was activated from the 10-day injured list Sunday -- is ready to make his first start of the season Monday.

P.J. Higgins - Healthy at Triple-AHiggins (elbow) has logged 73 plate appearances across 18 games at Triple-A Iowa this season, slashing .377/.479/.508 with a home run and 10 RBI.
ImpactHiggins' availability for the start of the 2022 season looked to be in jeopardy after he underwent Tommy John surgery last summer, but he demonstrated enough progress in his throwing program during spring training to make his debut as a catcher back on April 5. He's continued to see most of his action at catcher for Iowa while occasionally dabbling at first base (three starts) and third base (three starts) on his days off from behind the plate.

Brendon Little - Moves past elbow injuryLittle (elbow) has tossed three scoreless innings across three relief appearances since being reinstated from Triple-A Iowa's 7-day injured list May 5. He's scattered one hit and f...
ImpactBack in November, Little was diagnosed with a stress reaction in his left elbow, with the injury sidelining him for the first week of the 2022 minor-league season. Now healthy again, Little will look to carve out a high-leverage role in the Iowa bullpen.
