As a position player, Mathis won't require the year-plus-long recovery process that pitchers face for Tommy John surgery, but the 21-year-old still may not be fully cleared for the start of the 2025 minor-league season. Mathis could also be limited to playing designated hitter early on in the 2025 campaign if he hasn't completed his throwing program by the end of the spring.
